I am grateful to live and work on the sacred land of Tkaronto, situated on the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe, the Chippewa, the Wendat, the Haudenosaunee and the Mississaugas of Credit River, covered by Treaty 13 (aka. the Dish with One Spoon Treaty), now home to many First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples, as well as Europeans and all newcomers who have been invited into this treaty in the spirit of peace, friendship and respect. Colonialism has and continues to invisibilize Indigenous peoples’ histories, connections to and rights on their ancestral lands. As a settler from Iran, who immigrated to Tkaronto as a refugee during childhood, I am committed to taking intentional and pragmatic steps towards reconciliation through ongoing education, reflection on and awareness of my relationship to the land and my responsibility to protect it, as well as donations to Indigenous-led organizations and initiatives serving the needs, rights and interests of Indigenous communities across Turtle Island.
